Somewhere in a tiny village in Souther France Jacques Forêt manages his small office of the Gendarmerie mainly dealing with petty crimes like bicycle thefts or so. Before moving in the South Forêt was a detective in Paris … Now his investigative talents are a plus when suddenly people vanish into thin air or corpses pile up in the countryside. Finally he leaves his job as a gendarme and becomes a private investigator facing more crime cases of all sorts – always in this rural backwater region.

Bevor er in den Süden zog, war Forêt ein Kommissar in Paris … Jetzt ist sein Ermittlungstalent von Vorteil, wenn plötzlich Menschen verschwinden oder sich Leichen in der ländlichen Umgebung finden. Living in the Countryside
Forêt was an investigator at the police in Paris – then after some incident when he got injured by a gunshot bullet he decided to leave Paris and become a gendarme in Southern France, in a small village, where he is responsible for everyone and anything. He’s got a boss, but his office is in the next small town. His boss runs a tight ship. Sometimes Forêt gets help by a colleague for some days, but the staffing level is narrow. Forêt’s boss doesn’t like any investigations based on assumptions and always seems to hope that everything will turn out all right, automatically.
Most of the cases are petty crime like poaching, like bicycle thefts … Forêt doesn’t seem to be challenged enough. That’s why he is always eager to some more investigations than obviously necessary – especially when his boss tries to call him off and likes to bury a case. However, Forêt has got a fine gut feeling and doesn’t waste precious resources although it seems that he fishes around most of the time.
In short: Forêt is successful and solves the long lasting case of a serial murderer … However, subsequently he decides to leave the police and become a private investigator, in the beginning working for a company although still in deep connection with his former colleagues and the investigating magistrate. By this move in his career new cases with different subjects are on the horizon and Forêt may proof his ability to untangle complex cases with links into the past. Finally he sets up his own investigation company having some co-workers around him.
Although more in a rural French backwater than in a megalopolis there are more murders and crime cases as you might suppose. Obviously bucolic, picturesque villages and slow life don’t mean the absence of crime. (However, this isn’t really news!)
Who is Beth?
Forêt is in love with Beth, an English woman living part-time in Southern France. All i. e. a love affair starts before the novels start. Otherwise Beth was married, is now a widow with secrets – or better: there are secrets relating to her dead husband. Forêt tries to help whenever and wherever he can. All in all it develops into some sort of on-off relationship. It seems that both don’t have the heart to go ahead.
Finally they find their home together and Beth moves to France. They marry and there is a baby. The years fly by. Unfortunately Beth will die … and Forêt has to bring up his child as a single father. He manages hard to combine his job and his life as a father – and to prevent any attempts of Beth’s family to transfer his child and the responsibility for the child to England.
Forêt is not alone where he lives and works. Around him there is a village community and neighbors, colleagues … The novels not only deal with Forêt and his cases, but you also learn quite a lot about his social environment and the mechanisms of a small village where there seems to be only little privacy. (Nevertheless there is always room for any criminal activities among the shades …)
The novels range over some years accompanying the cases as well as the lives of Forêt and all his friends and neighbours. Also some cases may pop up again some time later when new evidence is suddenly revealed or sometimes a case is not completely finished at the end of the novel. All seems to be an ongoing story. What makes these novels so interesting and compelling is this mix of crime and cases with the life of all the protagonists, the insights into living in a small village …
Nevertheless you may read each novel as it is – you won’t need to start from the beginning, novel by novel …
Vom Leben auf dem Lande
Forêt war Ermittler bei der Polizei in Paris – dann, nach einem Zwischenfall, bei dem er durch eine Kugel verletzt wurde, beschloss er, Paris zu verlassen und Gendarm in Südfrankreich zu werden, in einem kleinen Dorf, wo er für alles und jeden verantwortlich ist. Er hat einen Chef, aber dessen Büro ist in der nächsten Kleinstadt. Sein Chef führt ein strenges Regiment. Manchmal bekommt Forêt für ein paar Tage Hilfe von einem Kollegen, aber die Personaldecke ist eng. Forêts Chef mag keine Ermittlungen, die auf Vermutungen beruhen, und scheint immer zu hoffen, dass sich alles von selbst regelt.
Bei den meisten Fällen handelt es sich um Kleinkriminalität wie Wilderei, wie Fahrraddiebstähle … Forêt scheint nicht überfordert zu sein. Deshalb ist er immer darauf erpicht, mehr zu ermitteln, als offensichtlich nötig ist – vor allem, wenn sein Chef ihn abwimmeln will, weil er glaubt, dass weitere Nachforschungen nicht notwendig sind. Doch Forêt hat ein feines Gespür und verschwendet keine wertvollen Ressourcen (wie sein Chef ihm vorwirft), auch wenn es scheint, als fische er erst einmal im Trüben.
Kurz gesagt: Forêt ist erfolgreich und klärt den Fall eines langjährigen Serienmörders auf … Doch dann beschließt er, die Polizei zu verlassen und zunächst als Privatdetektiv für eine Firma zu arbeiten, obwohl er immer noch in enger Verbindung mit seinen ehemaligen Kollegen und dem Untersuchungsrichter steht. Durch diesen Karriereschritt zeichnen sich neue, interessante Fälle ab und Forêt kann seine Fähigkeit unter Beweis stellen, vor allem komplexe Fälle mit Verbindung zu Taten und Ereignissen in der Vergangenheit zu entschlüsseln. Schließlich gründet er seine eigene Detektei und hat seine eigenen Mitarbeiter um sich herum.
Obwohl eher im ländlichen französischen Hinterland als in einer Großstadt angesiedelt, gibt es mehr Morde und Kriminalfälle, als man vermuten könnte. Natürlich bedeuten pittoreske Dörfer und eine behagliches Leben nicht, dass es keine Verbrechen gibt. (Aber das ist nicht wirklich eine Neuigkeit!)
Wer ist Beth?
Forêt ist in Beth verliebt, eine Engländerin, die einen Teil ihres Lebens in Südfrankreich verbringt. Die Liebesgeschichte beginnt, bevor die Romane beginnen. Darüber hinaus war Beth verheiratet, ist jetzt Witwe und hat Geheimnisse – oder besser: es gibt Geheimnisse, die mit ihrem verstorbenen Mann zu tun haben. Forêt versucht zu helfen, wann und wo er kann. Alles in allem ist es mittlerweile eine Art On-Off-Beziehung. Es scheint, dass beide nicht den Mut haben, weiterzugehen und den nächsten Schritt zu unternehmen.
Schließlich finden sie aber doch zueinander und Beth zieht nach Frankreich. Sie heiraten, und ein Baby erblickt das Licht der Welt. Die Jahre vergehen wie im Flug. Leider wird Beth sterben … und Forêt muss sein Kind als alleinerziehender Vater großziehen. Er schafft es nur mit Mühe, seinen Job und sein Leben als Vater unter einen Hut zu bringen – und gleichzeitig alle Versuche von Beths Familie zu unterbinden, sein Kind und die Verantwortung für das Kind nach England zu holen.
Forêt ist nicht allein, dort wo er lebt und arbeitet. Um ihn herum gibt es eine Dorfgemeinschaft und Nachbarn, Kollegen … In den Romanen geht es nicht nur um Forêt und seine Fälle, sondern man erfährt auch eine ganze Menge über sein soziales Umfeld und die Mechanismen eines kleinen Dorfes, in dem es nur wenig Privatsphäre zu geben scheint. (Trotzdem ist immer Platz und Gelegenheit für irgendwelche kriminellen Aktivitäten im Hintergrund …)
Die Romane erstrecken sich über mehrere Jahre und begleiten sowohl die Fälle als auch das Leben von Forêt und all seinen Freunden und Nachbarn. Manche Fälle, obwohl eigentlich abgeschlossen, werden einige Zeit später wieder akut, wenn plötzlich neue Beweise auftauchen, oder manchmal ist ein Fall am Ende des Romans noch nicht ganz abgeschlossen. Alles scheint eine fortlaufende Geschichte zu sein. Was diese Romane so interessant und fesselnd macht, ist diese Mischung aus Verbrechen und Fällen mit dem Leben aller Protagonisten, den Einblicken in das Leben in einem kleinen Dorf …
Trotzdem kann man jeden Roman so lesen, wie er ist – man muss nicht von vorne anfangen, Roman für Roman …
