When a black detective arrives at a crime scene in Maple Bluff, a rich and elitist suburb of Madison, Wisconsin, where a young white woman lies murdered at the doorstep of a black university lecturer, a new phase of his life starts without noticing at first. Ishmael makes a trip to Africa, to Nairobi, to investigate the background of the murder case and nail the culprit. In Nairobi he learns a lot about Africa, recent historic events, terrorism, violence and the maleficence of people, if black, if white. So after having solved the case he leaves the Madison police department in the US and becomes a private eye in Nairobi. However, crime and violence follow him everywhere.

Crime and Violence – Everywhere
Ishmael, a black, a colored, an African-American, was raised in Wisconsin by his parents, also black, also coloured, also African-American, to melt into the white US society. It worked: Ishmael became a successful detective of the Madison police department. As far as you may follow Ishmael is happy – set aside his grief about his sweetheart who left him when he became a serious cop.
This murder case concerning the gorgeous blonde lying dead on the doorstep of a home in the posh suburb of Madison leads him to Africa, to Kenya, to Nairobi. While trying to investigate about his case in the heat and mess of Nairobi Ishmael finds himself: it’s quite a long way, but … finally … So the murder case becomes a jigsaw piece on his way to a new way of life, to his black self, to a new future, to new and dangerous adventures … and finally to a wife.
While in the background there is Ishmael’s personal story and development there is crime and violence all over the place – not only in the US, but even more intense in Africa. Ishmael finds himself amid a case which is far bigger than he ever dared to think. It’s not only the murder of this beautiful young blonde in Wisconsin, but suddenly some of the recent cruel events in Africa like the Rwanda massacres and the genocide seem to play an important role.
Ishmael isn’t alone. When arriving in Nairobi David Odhiambo, called O, Ishmael’s counterpart at the Nairobi Police department, meets him at the airport. They become some sort of inseparable when investigating the murder case of the blonde … and later when they team up to become private investigators in Nairobi.
Nairobi is a frantic city where too many people do their own things. O knows all about it – and he knows which places and businesses in Nairobi to stay clear of. Foolish that Ishmael isn’t used to being cautious. Soon they get involved in trouble … Ishmael learns that in Nairobi firearms of all sorts and knives and machetes and whatever are a commodity and anybody uses them. There are corpses … Ishmael has to fight and to kill … simply to survive. Obviously it doesn’t matter: differently from the US he and O haven’t to explain anything … corpses simply seem to vanish into thin air.
Ishmael tries to uncover the truth behind the murder of the blonde and he dashes through Nairobi learning about middle class quarters – where O lives together with his wife – and slums. He visits strictly gated communities where the rich and famous live, he even admires one of the sumptuous houses of the colonial era where an Englishman lives who might have crucial information about … And there are the refugee camps where people from Rwanda hope for a better future …
At the end the gorgeous blonde from Wisconsin, who couldn’t be identified and wasn’t missed by anybody so far, is placed in Africa and her mission is revealed. She was on warpath to get revenge … Unfortunately she annoyed some people, powerful people, who were afraid that their wealth and their reputations might suffer damage. So she had to die. Ishmael and O learn a lot about the background which sprawls from Africa to the US – and anywhere in between. It’s an international business.
Ishmael decides to move to Africa and settles in Nairobi to become a private eye. O joins him. They work with negligible success, but they are happy … Then suddenly a case appears on the horizon even bigger than the case of the murdered blonde … and they get involved in international terrorism and counterterrorism and learn quite a lot about the private objectives of nations.
Unfortunately there are only two novels so far about Ishmael and his fast-paced life in the US and Africa … Maybe a follow-up will emerge one day …
Verbrechen und Gewalt – überall …
Ishmael, ein Schwarzer, ein Farbiger, ein Afroamerikaner, wurde in Wisconsin von seinen Eltern, ebenfalls schwarz, ebenfalls farbig, ebenfalls afroamerikanisch, erzogen, um sich in die weiße US-Gesellschaft einzufügen. Das hat geklappt: Ishmael wurde ein erfolgreicher Kiminalermittler bei der Polizei von Madison. Soweit man sehen kann, ist Ishmael glücklich – sieht man einmal von der Trauer um seine Beziehung ab, als seine Geliebte ihn verließ, sobald er ein richtiger Polizist wurde.
Der Mordfall um die schöne Blondine, die tot vor der Tür eines Hauses im noblen Vorort von Madison liegt, führt ihn nach Afrika, nach Kenia, nach Nairobi. Während er versucht, in der Hitze und dem Chaos von Nairobi in seinem Fall zu ermitteln, stellt Ishmael fest: Es ist ein langer Weg, aber … endlich … So wird der Mordfall zu einem Puzzleteil auf seinem Weg zu einer neuen Lebensweise, zu seinem schwarzen Ich, zu einer neuen Zukunft, zu neuen und gefährlichen Abenteuern … und schließlich zu einer Frau.
Während im Hintergrund Ishmaels persönliche Geschichte und Entwicklung stehen, gibt es überall um ihn herum Verbrechen und Gewalt – nicht nur in den USA, sondern noch viel heftiger in Afrika. Ishmael findet sich inmitten eines Falles wieder, der weitaus größer ist, als er jemals zu denken wagte. Es geht nicht nur um den Mord an der schönen jungen Blondine in Wisconsin, sondern plötzlich scheinen einige der jüngsten grausamen Ereignisse in Afrika wie die Massaker in Ruanda und der Völkermord eine wichtige Rolle zu spielen.
Ishmael ist nicht allein. Bei seiner Ankunft in Nairobi holt ihn David Odhiambo, genannt O, Ishmaels Gegenpart bei der Polizei von Nairobi, am Flughafen ab. Die beiden werden unzertrennlich, als sie im Mordfall der Blondine ermitteln … und später, als sie sich als Privatdetektive in Nairobi zusammentun.
Nairobi ist eine hektische Stadt, in der zu viele Menschen ihr eigenes Ding machen. O weiß alles darüber – und er weiß, welche Orte und Interessen man in Nairobi meiden sollte. Dumm nur, dass Ishmael es nicht gewohnt ist, vorsichtig zu sein. Bald werden sie in Schwierigkeiten verwickelt … Ishmael erfährt, dass in Nairobi Schusswaffen aller Art und Messer und Macheten und was-auch-sonst-noch-immer tägliches Gut sind und jeder sie benutzt. Es gibt Leichen … Ishmael muss kämpfen und töten … einfach um zu überleben. Offensichtlich spielt es keine große Rolle: anders als in den USA müssen er und O nichts erklären … die Leichen scheinen einfach zu verschwinden.
Ishmael versucht, die Wahrheit hinter dem Mord an der Blondine aufzudecken: er rast durch Nairobi und lernt dabei Viertel der Mittelschicht – wo O mit seiner Frau lebt – und Slums kennen. Er besucht streng bewachte Wohnanlagen, in denen die Reichen und Berühmten leben, er bewundert sogar eines der prächtigen Häuser aus der Kolonialzeit, in dem ein Engländer wohnt, der entscheidende Informationen haben könnte … Und dann sind da noch die Flüchtlingslager, in denen Menschen aus Ruanda auf eine bessere Zukunft hoffen …
Am Ende wird die wunderschöne Blondine aus Wisconsin, die nicht identifiziert werden konnte und die bisher von niemandem vermisst wurde, in Afrika wiedererkannt und ihre Mission wird enthüllt. Sie war auf dem Kriegspfad, um sich zu rächen … Leider hat sie einige Leute verärgert, mächtige Leute, die Angst hatten, dass ihr Reichtum und ihr Ruf Schaden nehmen könnten. Also musste sie sterben. Ishmael und O erfahren eine Menge über die Hintergründe, die sich von Afrika bis in die USA – und überall dazwischen – erstrecken. Es ist ein internationales Geschäft, das gestört wurde.
Ishmael beschließt, nach Afrika zu ziehen und lässt sich in Nairobi nieder, um Privatdetektiv zu werden. O schließt sich ihm an. Sie arbeiten mit mäßigem Erfolg, aber sie sind glücklich … Dann taucht plötzlich ein Fall am Horizont auf, der noch größer ist als der Fall der ermordeten Blondine … und sie werden in den internationalen Terrorismus und die Terrorismusbekämpfung verwickelt und lernen eine ganze Menge über die privaten Ziele einzelner Nationen.
Leider gibt es bisher nur zwei Romane über Ishmael und sein rasantes Leben in den USA und Afrika … Vielleicht gibt es ja eines Tages eine Fortsetzung …
