A Very Professional Team
There is DI Wilkins and DI Wilkins in the Homicide Division of the Oxford Criminal Investigation Department. This leads to complications and mix-ups both within the police force and outside it – and, of course, to a great deal of stress for their superiors. The fact that the two of them work as a duo doesn’t help much either. There’s constant friction between them. It helps even less that both would prefer to work alone, or at least with a different partner. I wonder what the reason could be?
Ryan Wilkins grew up in a caravan park. His father is a violent alcoholic who used to take his anger out on his wife and their two children time and again. The children have now been living away from home for years and are standing on their own two feet.
Ryan found the love of his life and became the father of an amazingly clever little boy, now of pre-school age, whom he adores. His wife died of an overdose. By chance, Ryan came across a special police programme for career changers without police training or a university degree. He managed to get accepted and became a Detective Inspector.
Well, Ryan has a problem with his temper; he tends to lose his cool quite often and becomes more or less violent. Especially when he comes up against authority figures and the establishment, he quickly turns into a bit of a rebel who provokes people and stirs up trouble. These aren’t exactly qualities that are conducive to a career in the police force. So the assignment in Oxford is also a sort of trial period, after Ryan once again lost his temper at his first post and literally stepped on an influential person’s toes.
What’s more … Ryan doesn’t exactly dress as you’d expect a DI to, but rather as if he were constantly working undercover: dungarees, colourful trainers, hoodies … He’s not exactly a model police officer. Nevertheless: torn between his love for his son, for whom he is responsible, the various parenting responsibilities – which he often, however, happily passes on to his sister – and his work, into which he always throws himself with great enthusiasm, he achieves success. He always takes a very unconventional approach and often acts on gut instinct, but ultimately he solves his cases. These successes, which are very important to his superiors, save him from being sacked for good, even if they often lead to internal investigations and suspensions.
On the other hand, there is Ray Wilkins, whose family comes from Nigeria; he has a degree from Oxford and also ended up in the Homicide Squad through a special programme for career changers joining the police force. He lives at a completely different social level and is, by comparison with Ryan, well-off.
Ray is married and the father of twins who are still babies. His wife often feels neglected when Ray throws himself into his investigative work.
Of course, Ray is a good investigator too, but he sticks strictly to the rules that Ryan is so keen to flout. Ray is definitely a model police officer; he’s also focused on his career – and Ryan’s eccentric behaviour gets in the way of that. The key point is that, together, they are responsible for some truly extraordinary successes.
There’s a lot going on in Oxford. Ryan and Ray aren’t just navigating the academic landscape; they also have to deal with everyday crime – which harbours more violence than one might suspect – and Oxford’s criminal underworld. Cases that initially seem fairly straightforward quickly spiral out of control, leaving the two Wilkins reeling.
What makes these novels so compelling is that it’s always a surprise to see how Ryan approaches a problem and how he behaves, and that it’s constantly a challenge for Ray to feign a rational approach. Both are put to the test by their private lives, which are also full of surprises. Each novel is multi-layered – and that alone makes it interesting.
Ein ganz spezielles Arbeitsteam
Es gibt Inspektor Wilkins und Inspektor Wilkins im Morddezernat bei der Kriminalpolizei in Oxford. Dies führt zu Verwicklungen, zu Verwechslungen in der Polizei und außerhalb – und erst recht zu viel Stress bei den Vorgesetzten. Auch die Tatsache, dass beide als Duo unterwegs sind, hilft wenig. Es gibt immer wieder Reibereien. Noch weniger hilft, dass beide lieber allein agieren würden oder zumindest jeder mit einem anderen Partner. Woran mag es denn wohl liegen?
Ryan Wilkins ist in einem Wohnwagenpark groß geworden. Sein Vater ist ein brutaler Trinker, der seine Wut gern immer wieder an Ehefrau und den beiden Kindern ausgelassen hat. Die Kinder sind nun schon seit Jahren ausgezogen und stehen auf eigenen Füßen.
Ryan fand die Liebe seines Lebens und wurde Vater eines erstaunlich cleveren kleinen Jungen, mittlerweile im Vorschulalter, den er vergöttert. Seine Frau starb an einer Überdosis. Durch Zufall geriet Ryan an ein Sonderprogramm der Polizei für Quereinsteiger ohne Polizeiausbildung oder Uni-Abschluss. Er schaffte es, aufgenommen zu werden und wurde Detektive Inspector.
Nun, Ryan hat ein Problem mit seinem Temperament, er flippt gern und oft aus und wird mehr oder weniger gewalttätig. Speziell wenn er mit Obrigkeit und Establishment zu tun bekommt, wird aus ihm schnell ein kleiner Revoluzzer, der provoziert und für Aufruhr sorgt. Dies sind nicht gerade Eigenschaften, die für eine Karriere im Polizeidienst förderlich sind. So ist der Einsatz in Oxford auch eine Art Bewährungsprobe, nachdem Ryan auf seinem ersten Posten wieder einmal ausgeflippt ist und einer einflussreichen Person wortwörtlich auf die Füße getreten ist.
Außerdem … kleidet sich Ryan nicht unbedingt, wie man es von einem Inspektor erwartet, sondern eher als ob er permanent undercover aktiv ist: Latzhosen, bunte Sneaker, Hoodies … Er ist kein Vorzeigepolizist.
Dennoch: hin- und hergerissen zwischen der Liebe zu seinem Sohn, für den er verantwortlich ist, den vielfältigen Erziehungsverpflichtungen, die er oft doch wiederum gern auf seine Schwester abwälzt, und seiner Arbeit, in die er sich immer mit viel Elan hineinstürzt, erzielt er Erfolge. Er geht immer sehr unkonventionell vor und handelt oft nach Bauchgefühl, aber letztendlich löst er seine Fälle. Diese Erfolge, die für die Vorgesetzten sehr wichtig sind, bewahren ihn vor einem endgültigen Rauswurf, auch wenn es oft zu internen Ermittlungen und Beurlaubungen kommt.
Auf der andren Seite steht Ray Wilkins, dessen Familie aus Nigeria stammt, mit einem Oxford-Abschluss, der ebenfalls durch eine Sonderprogramm für Quereinsteiger bei der Polizei in der Mordkommission gelandet ist. Er lebt auf einem ganz anderen gesellschaftlichen Niveau und ist im Vergleich zu Ryan wohlhabend.
Ray ist verheiratet und Vater von Zwillingen im Babyalter. Seine Frau fühlt sich oft vernachlässigt, wenn sich Ray in die Ermittlungsarbeit stürzt.
Natürlich ist auch Ray ein guter Ermittler, aber geht streng nach den Regeln vor, auf die Ryan so gern pfeift. Ray ist nicht nur ein Vorzeigepolizist, er hat auch seine Karriere im Blick – und da stört Ryan durch sein schräges Benehmen. Entscheidend ist, dass beide zusammen für Erfolge verantwortlich zeichnen, die außergewöhnlich sind.
In Oxford passiert viel. Ryan und Ray durchpflügen nicht nur die akademische Landschaft, sondern müssen sich auch mit Alltagskriminalität, hinter der sich mehr Gewalt verbirgt als vermutet, und der kriminellen Unterwelt in Oxford beschäftigen. Zunächst recht einfach erscheinende Fälle ufern schnell aus und bringen die beiden Wilkins ins Rotieren.
Die Romane bestechen dadurch, dass es immer eine Überraschung ist, wie Ryan an ein Problem herangeht und wie er sich gebärdet, und dass es für Ray immer wieder eine Herausforderung ist, ein rationales Vorgehen zu simulieren. Beide werden von ihrem Privatleben gefordert, das auch immer wieder für Überraschungen gut ist. Jeder Roman ist vielschichtig – und allein dadurch schon interessant.
