Precious Ramotswe decides to establish a detective agency when moving to Gaborone after her father’s death. So she becomes the one and only female PI in Botswana, dealing with all shades of crime. Of course she lives in Botswana, a quiet and cosy place on earth, where crime is often a family affair like looking for lost daughters or missing husbands, like money vanishing out of the register in a shop, like smuggling … Nevertheless sometimes it gets risky even for Mma Ramotswe.

Crime in a Certain Corner of Africa
Africa is a vast continent, a home to different nations and cultures. Concerning crime fiction there are novels based on the colonial legacy as well as thrillers dealing with today’s excrescences of terrorism. There are novels combining civil war activities, violent recruitment of child soldiers and genocid rushes of the recent past with present criminal offenses as well as state-of-the-art detective stories in modern cities resp. megacities with all collateral damages like bribery, perversion of justice, unjustified enrichment, fraud, political manoeuvres … whatever.
However, there is also Gaborone, capital of Botswana, a quiet peaceful countryside, where all people seem to live an unhurried life. Well … it seems so. If there weren’t any crime nobody would need a private detective agency. Mma Ramotswe managing the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency would be out-of-work.
Mma Ramotswe set up her agency after her father’s death when being able to invest some part of her inheritance in her future by selling some cattle. Years ago when rather young she fell in love with the wrong man, on the spur of the moment in love, then abused, next moment alone with a baby dying within days. Mma Ramotswe, a traditional built woman, doesn’t give up. She realizes her dream of self-employment and become a private detective.
Slowly clients appear and Mma Ramotswe starts working and makes a name for herself. The stream of clients grows. Although she hasn’t got any education or training concerning the work of a detective she is always successful relying on her knowledge, her experience and her good judgement. Well, she sometimes seeks advice from a book about The Principles of Private Detection.
What happens in Gaborone and Botswana?
There are husbands and wives who like escapades. There are teenage daughters and sons who like to try living on their own principles always including alcohol or drugs and men/women somewhat older. There are burglaries the police doesn’t seem to handle appropriately. There are cases of fraud. People vanish into thin air. There are cases of inheritance … Sometimes people die and someone thinks that further investigations might be necessary.
If the police force isn’t interested or thinking that there is no crime Mma Ramotswe will help. She shares her small office with her secretary, Grace Makutsi, who once graduated from Gaborone’s Secretary Colleges with the phenomenal result of 92%. Over the years Mma Makutsi becomes an assistant detective, an associate detective and finally a partner. Together both women tackle all cases who end up on their doorstep.
Both are married and there are children. Mma Ramotswe marries Rra J. L. B. Matekoni, the owner of the neighboring car repair shop. Mma Makutsi is married to Rra Radiphuti, the owner of furniture company, and they have a son. Mma Ramotswe and her husband have adopted two resp. three foster children. So there is always quite a lot of work waiting at home.
… and you may be sure that there are always funny events around the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, the garage, the homes … You may also be sure that Mma Ramotswe always is in the know at the end and will separate foul play from quirky coincidences.

Kriminelle Aktivitäten in einer gewissen Ecke von Afrika
Afrika ist ein riesiger Kontinent, in dem verschiedene Nationen und Kulturen leben. Im Bereich der Kriminalliteratur gibt es sowohl Romane, die auf dem kolonialen Erbe basieren, als auch Thriller, die sich mit den aktuellen Auswüchsen des Terrorismus befassen. Es gibt Romane, die Bürgerkriegsgeschehen, gewaltsame Rekrutierung von Kindersoldaten und rassistische Ausschreitungen der jüngeren Vergangenheit mit kriminellen Delikten der Gegenwart verbinden, aber auch hochaktuelle Krimis in modernen Großstädten bzw. Megacities mit allen Kollateralschäden wie Bestechung, Rechtsbeugung, ungerechtfertigte Bereicherung, Betrug, politische Manöver … was auch immer.
Es gibt aber auch Gaborone, die Hauptstadt von Botswana, ein ruhiges, friedliches Land, in dem alle Menschen ein ruhiges Leben zu führen scheinen. Nun … es scheint so. Wenn es keine Verbrechen gäbe, bräuchte niemand eine Privatdetektei. Mma Ramotswe, die Chefin der No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, wäre arbeitslos.
Mma Ramotswe gründete ihre Agentur nach dem Tod ihres Vaters, als sie einen Teil ihres Erbes in ihre Zukunft investieren konnte, indem sie einige Rinder verkaufte. Vor Jahren, als sie noch recht jung war, verliebte sie sich in den falschen Mann, war blind und selig vor Liebe, dann wurde sie missbraucht und im nächsten Moment blieb sie allein zurück mit einem Baby, das innerhalb weniger Tage starb. Mma Ramotswe, eine Frau mit traditioneller Figur, gibt nicht auf. Sie verwirklicht ihren Traum von der Selbstständigkeit und wird Privatdetektivin.
Langsam kommen Kunden, und Mma Ramotswe beginnt zu arbeiten und sich einen Namen zu machen. Der Strom der Kunden wächst an. Obwohl sie keine Ausbildung als Detektivin hat, ist sie immer erfolgreich und verlässt sich auf ihr Wissen, ihre Erfahrung und ihr gutes Urteilsvermögen. Nun, manchmal holt sie sich auch Rat aus einem Buch über die Prinzipien der Privatdetektei.
Was passiert in Gaborone und Botswana?
Es gibt Ehemänner und Ehefrauen, die gerne mal fremd gehen. Es gibt Töchter und Söhne im Teenageralter, die gerne versuchen, nach ihren eigenen Prinzipien zu leben, meist sind Alkohol oder Drogen im Spiel wie auch ältere Männer oder Frauen. Es gibt Einbrüche, mit denen die Polizei nicht angemessen umzugehen scheint. Es gibt Fälle von Betrug. Menschen verschwinden, scheinen sich in Luft aufzulösen. Es gibt Probleme mit Erbschaften … Manchmal sterben Menschen und jemand glaubt, dass weitere Ermittlungen notwendig sein könnten.
Wenn die Polizei nicht interessiert ist oder meint, es gäbe kein Verbrechen, hilft Mma Ramotswe. Sie teilt ihr kleines Büro mit ihrer Sekretärin Grace Makutsi, die einst die Sekretärinnenschule in Gaborone mit dem phänomenalen Ergebnis von 92 % abgeschlossen hat. Im Laufe der Jahre wird Mma Makutsi erst zur Assistentin, dann zur stellvertretenden Detektivin und schließlich zur Partnerin. Gemeinsam nehmen die beiden Frauen alle Fälle in Angriff,die auf ihrer Türschwelle landen.
Beide sind verheiratet und haben Kinder. Mma Ramotswe ist mit Rra J. L. B. Matekoni verheiratet, dem Besitzer der benachbarten Autowerkstatt. Mma Makutsi ist mit Rra Radiphuti, dem Besitzer eines Möbelgeschäfts, verheiratet, und sie haben einen Sohn. Mma Ramotswe und ihr Mann haben erst zwei, später drei Pflegekinder adoptiert. Zu Hause wartet also auf beide immer eine Menge Arbeit.
… und ihr könnt sicher sein, dass es immer wieder lustige Begebenheiten rund um die No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, die Werkstatt, das Zuhause … gibt. Ihr könnt auch sicher sein, dass Mma Ramotswe am Ende immer den Durchblick behält und falsches Spiel von skurrilen Zufällen zu trennen weiß.
