Somewhere in the north of the USA where there is more wilderness than cities Sheriff Walt Longmire is responsible for law and order. Of course he doesn’t saddle his horse and adjusts his stetson before riding into the sunset. Today he drives a real big 4WD, uses modern communications equipment and up to date rifles. However, a modern Indian reservation is nearby and Longmire’s best friend is a Cheyenne. All people living in this never-ending vastness are keen to solve any problems on their own. Not an easy job for Longmire and his small team.
Irgendwo im Norden der USA, wo es mehr Wildnis als Städte gibt, ist Sheriff Walt Longmire für Recht und Ordnung zuständig. Natürlich sattelt er nicht länger sein Pferd und rückt seinen Stetson gerade, bevor er in den Sonnenuntergang reitet. Heute fährt er einen richtig großen 4×4, modernes Kommunikationsequipment fliegt herum und Waffen sind im Wagen sorgsam verstaut. Allerdings befindet sich in der Nähe ein Indianerreservat und Longmires bester Freund ist ein Cheyenne. Alle Menschen, die in dieser unendlichen Weite leben, sind immer bestrebt, alle Probleme selbst zu lösen. Keine leichte Aufgabe für Longmire und sein kleines Team.

Last Sheriff Standing
Welcome to the Wild Wild West – or whatever remained of it. Somewhere in Wyoming in Absaroka County (you won’t find it on the map!) Sheriff Walt Longmire stands for law and order. He commands a small team of officers almost lost in the vastness of the place. Of course they all drive around in big 4WD, the gun at their hips and the rifle in the 4WD.
… we are in the 90s resp. 00s … ongoing! However, except of modern arms, modern cars and lots of electronic equipment, not too much changed. People stick to their estates and defend everything to the full extend of their capabilities. So Walt and his team are always busy.
I really enjoyed the modern Wild Wild West stories although sometimes it’s real hard stuff. Law and order doesn’t always mean that the Sheriff and his team straighten everything up and send the culprit to the court. Often … justice is done by the parties involved which results in more dirty work for Walt. Somehow it’s the daily life for anybody to wear a gun and shoot whenever thinking it’s necessary. Of course anybody is always sure that it is his unalienable right to do so. Poor Walt … and his team!
Of course there is an Indian reservation, a homeland for an Indian tribe, and of course there is always some kind of trouble. Modern Indians have their very own plans for future and business – as well as crime. They’ve got their own tribal police and Walt is lost and without rights as soon as he enters the reservation. Co-operation? Low … very low …
Nevertheless one of the Walt’s best buddies, Henry Standing Bear, is one of the Indians. He manages his own bar. Both were in Vietnam when the USA fought their war over there … Walt relies on Henry again and again – and Henry relies on Walt. Together they solve any case – and together they manage to survive any disaster in the wilderness that would break anybody else.
Walt was married. His wife Martha was killed and the mystery of her death (failed robbery, manslaughter, murder) arouses the reader’s curiosity during some of the novels. At the end it’s a mess almost breaking the back of Walt’s best buddy.
Life isn’t easy for Walt after his wife’s death. He lives on the edge in a more or less dilapidated house not able to start basic renovation work. Nobody can rescue him out of his private hell … only when there are crimes around him, bodies suddenly piling up Walt seems to get the light at the end of the tunnel.
He’s got a daughter, Cady, who studied law and worries about her father. Nevertheless life moves on and Walt’s daughter gets married and becomes a mother making Walt to a grandfather.
One of his deputies is Vic Moretti with whom Walt has an ongoing affair … while Vic’s brother becomes Cady’s husband aka Walt’s son-in-law. Family troubles? Not so far.
Walt has severe problems of getting old (my impression). He is always keen on doing – sometimes preposterous – stunts like staying in the mountains in the mid of winter during a blizzard. Each novel is full of his adventures in nature and amid the elements. He often gets injured, but recovers – ready for his next stunt. (Thank goodness there is Henry who never lets him down.)
Does he seriously look for life-threatening situations? Is it because of his age or because of missing his beloved wife? It seems that neither his daughter whom he adores or his grandchild nor any friends like Henry or lovers like Vic are able to brighten up his life. From the viewpoint of the readers of the novels it means that excitement is guaranteed in the wild and vast landscape of Wyoming.
Der letzte Sheriff
Willkommen im Wilden Westen – oder was davon übrig geblieben ist. Irgendwo in Wyoming im Absaroka County (das findet ihr nicht auf der Landkarte!) sorgt Sheriff Walt Longmire für Recht und Ordnung. Er befehligt ein kleines Team von Polizeikräften, das sich in den Weiten des Landes fast verliert. Natürlich fahren sie alle mit der Waffe einsatzbereit am Gürtel in einem prächtigen, riesigen 4WD herum.
… wir sind immerhin in den 90er bzw. 00er Jahren – und darüber hinaus! Doch außer modernen Waffen, modernen Autos und viel Elektronik hat sich nicht allzu viel verändert. Die Menschen hocken auf ihrem Land und verteidigen sich und alles um sie herum bis aufs Blut. Walt und sein Team können sich über mangelnde Arbeit nicht beklagen.
Mir gefallen diese modernen Wild-West-Stories, denn sie sind eine spezielle Art von Kriminalroman, obwohl es manchmal wirklich harter Tobak ist, mit dem man konfrontiert wird. Recht und Ordnung bedeutet nicht immer, dass der Sheriff und sein Team alles aufklären und die Schuldigen hinter Gitter bringen. Oft … wird vermeintliche Gerechtigkeit von den Beteiligten selbst ausgeübt, was dann zu noch mehr schmutziger Arbeit für Walt führt. Es ist immer noch so, ganz alltäglich, dass jeder eine Waffe besitzt und erst einmal schießt, bevor Fragen gestellt werden. Jeder hält das für sein ganz natürliches Recht. Armer Walt … armes Team!
Natürlich gibt es hier in Wyoming auch ein Indianerreservat, die Heimat eines Indianerstammes, und natürlich gibt es immer irgendwie Ärger. Die Indianer von heute haben ihre eigenen Interessen und sehen ihre eigenen Geschäftsinteressen, Kriminalität eingeschlossen. Es gibt eine Stammespolizei – und Walt ist machtlos, sobald er die Reservation betritt.
Andererseits gehört aber auch einer von Walts besten Freunden, Henry Standing Bear, zu den ansässigen Indianern. Er betreibt eine Bar. Beide waren zusammen in Vietnam, als die USA dort ihren Krieg führten … Walt verlässt sich immer auf Henry – und Henry verlässt sich auf Walt.
Walt war verheiratet. Seine Frau Martha starb und das Rätsel um ihren Tod (missglückter Raubüberfall oder Totschlag oder Mord) macht den Leser von Roman zu Roman neugieriger. Am Ende stellt sich heraus, dass eine ziemliche Schweinerei abgelaufen ist, die im Nachhinein Walts bestem Freund Henry fast das Genick bricht.
Das Leben ist für Walt nach dem Tod seiner Frau nicht einfach. Er lebt einsam in einem mehr oder weniger baufälligen Haus und kann sich nicht dazu aufraffen, grundlegende Renovierungsarbeiten anzugehen. Niemand kann ihn aus seiner privaten Hölle retten … erst wenn um ihn herum Verbrechen geschehen und sich plötzlich Leichen stapeln, scheint Walt wieder Licht am Ende des Tunnels zu sehen.
Er hat auch eine Tochter, Cady, die Jura studiert hat und sich viele Sorgen um ihren Vater macht. Doch das Leben geht weiter und Walts Tochter heiratet schließlich und wird Mutter, was Walt zum Großvater macht.
Eine seiner Stellvertreterinnen ist Vic Moretti, mit der Walt eine Affäre hat … während gleichzeitig Vics Bruder Cadys Ehemann (also Walts Schwiegersohn) wird. Familienprobleme? Bis jetzt nicht.
Walt hat große Probleme mit dem Älterwerden (mein Eindruck). Er ist immer scharf darauf, – manchmal absurde – Risiken einzugehen, wie zum Beispiel mitten im Winter während eines Schneesturms ohne ausreichenden Schutz gegen die Kälte in den Bergen zu bleiben. (Gott sei Dank gibt es Henry, der immer zur Stelle ist, wenn es ernst wird.) Jeder Roman lebt von seinen Abenteuern in der Natur und dem Kampf mit den Elementen. Er wird oft verletzt, durchaus schwer verletzt, erholt sich aber schnell wieder – bereit für seinen nächsten Ausflug in die Gefahr.
Sucht er absichtlich nach lebensbedrohlichen Situationen? Liegt es an seinem Alter oder daran, dass er seine geliebte Frau so sehr vermisst? Es scheint, dass weder seine Tochter, die er anbetet, noch sein Enkelkind, noch Freunde wie Henry oder eine Geliebte wie Vic sein Leben lebenswert machen können. Für die Leser der Romane bedeutet dies natürlich, dass weiterhin Spannung garantiert ist – in dieser Eindamen und leeren Weite von Wyoming.
