Candice, eine frisch geschiedene Mutter von vier Kindern, nimmt im Süden Frankreichs ihren Dienst wieder auf, nachdem sie 10 Jahre lang nur für ihre Familie da war. Da ist also ihr Beruf als Kriminalkommissarin in der Mordkommission, der sie immer wieder eher in sozial schwache Kreise führt, ihre Kinder, pubertierend …, die immer wieder für eine Überraschung gut sind, ihr Liebesleben, das langsam und chaotisch in Schwung kommt … Es reicht für eine Mischung aus Spannung und Komik, wobei die Komik niemals zu kurz kommt.
Candice, a newly divorced mother of four, resumes her job in the south of France after 10 years of being there only for her family. So there’s her job as Commandant de Police, homicide division, which repeatedly leads her rather into socially deprived circles, her children, pubescent … who are always good for a surprise, her love life, which slowly and chaotically gets going … It’s enough for a mixture of suspense and comedy, and the comedy is never too short.

Mother with 4 children, single …
Candice is in her early 40s, divorced with 4 children (daughter Emma (15), son Jules (13) and twins Martin and Léo (8)). As the years go by – i.e. the seasons – the children age, as does the mother, by 7-8 years by now. Candice thus gradually experiences all her children in teenage madness and with their first heartbreak.
Jules wants to be a chef and is passionate about cooking, which Candice finds quite good. The twins play twin games at school and sometimes drive Candice to despair. Her daughter is growing up and is interested in boys … and older men – and wants to start a career as actress. And of course the family grows: an orphaned dog is taken in!
Candice lives with her children in a very nice house. She takes care of the children and the school, the household … but she is not a perfect housewife. She still has an au pair girl at first; there are obviously no financial problems.
The new home is in the south of France … just moved here from Singapore – with bag and baggage and the children. She had taken a 10-year sabbatical because of the children, while her husband had a career and travelled internationally – in the USA, in Singapore … But now after the divorce, she is back in France – and in the south (where she didn’t live before, because she is from the north of France).
There is also the ex-husband (divorce after adultery … a bit old-fashioned!). He lives very close to Candice, then later moves on to a house with a swimming pool when he has a new girlfriend. (The children are thrilled – by the pool!) Eventually he even remarries …
In Candice’s life there are also several new men … one after the other!
Candice is damn good looking, has curves and is a real woman. First her neighbour falls in love with her and vice versa. Then she has an affair with a colleague. Then there’s the ongoing non-relationship between one of her co-workers, who loves her but won’t admit it, and her, who loves him but won’t admit it.
This relationship eventually runs through the whole series: Candice and Antoine cannot come to each other – e.g. because each marries and separates again … and in between they are together briefly. Antoine becomes a father and has a bad accident … Then they are together, but …
I wondered whether this was a crime novel or a family saga … But the thriller is dominating. I have inhaled the seasons in binge-watching mode: Candice’s love life is always turbulent and provides comedy and entertainment. She also has a soft spot for the colour pink. She always wears something in pink: whether it’s her purse, her spectacle case, an umbrella, a scarf, shoes … And Candice is blonde. Somehow it all contrasts with her job in the homicide department and the milieu in which she investigates!
Candice works for the police. After the separation and the end of her time out, she has to find a way back in. She finds it hard …
On the first day, she squeezes into her old uniform (she has gained a few kilos!). She mistakenly assumes that she is supposed to attend a reception. (The reception has been cancelled at short notice, which she was not informed about by her supervisor!). So Candice has squeezed into her uniform. Her skirt bursts open. She wraps her uniform jacket around her hips. Her high heels are out of place on the sandy beach where the murder victim is waiting. She just takes them off. She is a laughing stock. Correction: she seems to be a laughing stock, because …
Candice shows everyone that she is anything but the blonde from the blonde joke. She investigates carefully and intuitively – sometimes a little too intuitively … but always with success. Maybe it’s because many (colleagues, suspects) don’t take the curvy blonde with the accessories in pink quite seriously.
I already mentioned her boss: an ice-cold career woman who wants Candice only reluctantly. But she has no choice – though she does put a few stumbling blocks in her way every now and then. Incidentally, the boss later becomes pregnant – everyone puzzles over who the father could be – and leaves the department. Candice has to replace her afterwards (sort of deputyship): the administrative work is a nightmare for her. As a rule she likes to postpone anything out of this sector.
Candice also gets a team. Not everyone in the team is happy with Candice: there is Antoine (the later non-relationship!), who would have liked to become boss himself. (… and at some point in the later seasons he also becomes Monsieur le Commissaire and the boss of the team and of Candice …). He comes from a wealthy family that would have preferred him to be a lawyer – in line with family tradition – rather than a policeman. There are young female colleagues with their own private problems. The team colleague with a migration background is not missing – nor is the computer freak. There is always some fluctuation in the team … Employees leave and others join.
Candice has her hands full keeping her team together and raising them to be an effective work team. It takes a long time before she is respected. But she always finds comfort with the forensic technician Pascale – also single – and later with the pathologist Nathalie when they talk and have a drink together.
Her cases tend to take place in the middle class and in the socially weak milieu. It’s about narcotics, people smuggling, illegal employment … Blackmail, kidnapping, prostitution … Fraud, embezzlement, robbery … rape … robbery … and always eventually there is a death (or several), victims, collateral damage … At first I wanted to use a beautiful photo of a southern French beach as a hook, then I decided on the harbour district: Candice’s cases have their home here rather than on board of luxury yachts.
What is the series based on?
A blonde with curves who, contrary to expectations, is intelligent, can think and solve cases. She somehow manages everything despite her gruelling everyday life with four children, ex-husband, mother and various lovers (“One, two…!”). There are scenes that amuse us – family debacles, everyday office life, perfidious colleagues who fall flat on their faces. But there are also extremely brutal scenes that are part of the job as a commandant in the homicide department … And Candice sometimes sails close to the wind resulting in stress with supervision and prosecution.

Yes – something to relax and unwind after the stress of everyday life!
Mutter mit 4 Kindern, alleinerziehend …
Candice ist Anfang 40, geschieden mit 4 Kindern (Tochter Emma (15), Sohn Jules (13) und die Zwillinge Martin und Léo (8)). Mit den Jahren – also den Staffeln – altern die Kinder ebenso wie die Mutter um mittlerweile 7-8 Jahre. Candice erlebt also nach und nach alle ihre Kinder im Teenager-Wahn und mit dem ersten Liebeskummer.
Jules möchte Koch werden und kocht mit Leidenschaft, was Candice ganz gut findet. Die Zwillinge spielen Zwillingsspielchen in der Schule und treiben Candice manchmal zur Verzweiflung. Ihre Tochter wird erwachsen und interessiert sich für Jungs … und ältere Männer – und will Schauspielerin werden. Und natürlich wächst die Familie: ein verwaister Hund wird aufgenommen!
Candice wohnt mit ihren Kindern in einem wirklich schönen Haus. Sie kümmert sich um die Kinder und die Schule, den Haushalt …, aber sie ist keine perfekte Hausfrau. Sie hat zuerst noch ein Au pair-Mädchen; finanzielle Probleme gibt es offensichtlich nicht.
Die neue Heimat liegt in Südfrankreich … gerade aus Singapur hierhin gezogen – mit Sack und Pack und den Kindern. Sie hatte eine 10jährige Auszeit wegen der Kinder genommen, nachdem ihr Mann Karriere machte und international unterwegs war – in den USA, in Singapur … Aber jetzt nach der Scheidung ist sie wieder in Frankreich – und zwar im Süden (wo sie früher nicht gelebt hat, denn sie stammt aus Nordfrankreich).
Es gibt auch noch den Ex-Mann (Scheidung nach Ehebruch … ein wenig altmodisch!). Er wohnt erst einmal ganz nah bei Candice, dann zieht er weiter in ein Haus mit Swimming-Pool, als er eine neue Freundin hat. (Die Kinder sind begeistert – vom Pool!) Schließlich heiratet er sogar wieder …
In Candice’ Leben gibt es auch verschiedene neue Männer … nacheinander! Candice sieht verdammt gut aus, hat Kurven und ist eine richtige Frau. Zuerst verliebt sich ihr Nachbar in sie und umgekehrt. Dann hat sie eine Affäre mit einem Kollegen. Außerdem gibt es noch die andauernde Nicht-Beziehung zwischen einem ihrer Mitarbeiter, der sie liebt, aber es nicht zugeben will, und ihr, die ihn liebt, aber es nicht zugeben will.
Diese Beziehung zieht sich schließlich durch die ganze Serie: Candice und Antoine können zueinander nicht kommen – z. B. weil jeder heiratet und sich dann recht schnell wieder trennt … und zwischendrin sind sie kurz zusammen. Antoine wird Vater und hat einen schlimmen Unfall … Dann sind sie wieder zusammen – oder auch nicht …
Ich habe mich schon gefragt, ob das jetzt ein Krimi ist oder eine Familiensaga … Aber der Krimi steht doch schon immer im Mittelpunkt. Ich habe die Staffeln im Binge-Watching-Modus inhaliert: Candice’ Liebesleben ist immer turbulent und sorgt für Komik und Unterhaltung. Außerdem hat sie ein Faible für die Farbe Pink. Sie trägt immer etwas in Pink: ob es die Geldbörse ist, das Brillenetui, ein Schirm, ein Schal, Schuhe … Und Candice ist blond. Irgendwie steht das alles im Kontrast zu ihrem Job in der Mordkommission und dem Milieu, in dem sie ermittelt!
Candice arbeitet bei der Kriminalpolizei. Nach der Trennung und dem Ende ihrer Auszeit muss sie wieder einen Einstieg finden. Es fällt ihr schwer …
Am 1. Tag zwängt sie sich in ihre alte Uniform (sie hat ein paar Kilo zugenommen!). Fälschlicherweise geht sie davon aus, dass sie an einem Empfang teilnehmen soll. (Der Empfang ist aber kurzfristig abgesagt worden, worüber sie ihre Vorgesetzte nicht informiert hat!). Candice hat sich also in ihre Uniform gezwängt. Ihr Rock platzt auf. Sie schlingt sich ihre Uniformjacke um die Hüften. Ihre High Heels sind am Sandstrand, wo das Mordopfer wartet, fehl am Platz. Sie zieht sie einfach aus. Sie ist eine Lachnummer. Korrektur: sie scheint eine Lachnummer zu sein, denn …
Candice zeigt allen, dass sie alles andere als die Blondine aus dem Blondinenwitz ist. Sie ermittelt sorgfältig und intuitiv – manchmal etwas zu intuitiv … aber immer mit Erfolg. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass viele (Kollegen, Verdächtige) die kurvige Blondine mit den Accessoires in Pink nicht ganz ernst nehmen.
Ich erwähnte schon ihre Chefin: eine eiskalte Karrierefrau, die Candice nur widerwillig haben will. Aber sie hat keine Wahl – allerdings legt sie ihr immer mal wieder ein paar Stolpersteine in den Weg. Die Chefin wird übrigens später schwanger – alle rätseln, wer der Vater sein könnte – und verlässt die Abteilung. Candice muss sie danach vertreten: die Verwaltungsarbeit ist ein einziger Alptraum für sie – sie lässt viele einfach erst einmal liegen.
Candice bekommt auch recht schnell ein Team. Nicht alle im Team sind glücklich mit Candice: da ist Antoine (die spätere Nicht-Beziehung!), der selbst gern Chef geworden wäre. (… und irgendwann in den späteren Staffeln wird er auch Monsieur le Commissaire und Chef des Teams und von Candice …) Er stammt aus einer wohlhabenden Familie, die ihn lieber – entsprechend der Familientradition – als Anwalt gesehen hätte, denn als Polizist. Da sind junge Kolleginnen mit ganz eigenen privaten Problemen. Der Teamkollege mit Migrationshintergund fehlt nicht – ebenso wenig wie der Computerfreak. Es gibt immer mal wieder etwas Fluktuation im Team … Mitarbeiter steigen aus und andere kommen hinzu.
Candice hat alle Hände voll zu tun, um ihr Team zusammenzuhalten und zu einem effektiven Arbeitsteam zu erziehen. Es dauert lange, bis sie respektiert wird. Trost findet sie aber immer wieder bei der Kriminaltechnikerin Pascale – auch Single – und später bei der Pathologin Nathalie, wenn sie zusammen reden und etwas trinken.
Ihre Fälle spielen eher in der Mittelschicht und im sozial schwachen Milieu. Es geht um Rauschgift, um Menschenschmuggel, um illegale Arbeitsverhältnisse … Erpressung, Entführung, Prostitution … Betrug, Unterschlagung, Überfälle … Vergewaltigung … Raub … und immer gibt es schließlich einen Toten (oder mehrere), Opfer, Kollateralschäden … Zuerst wollte ich ein schönes Bild von einem südfranzösischen Strand als Aufhänger nehmen, dann entschied ich mich für das Hafenviertel: Candice’ Fälle haben eher hier ihre Heimat als an Bord von Luxusjachten.
Wovon lebt die Serie?
Von einer Blondine mit Kurven, die wider Erwarten intelligent ist, denken kann und Fälle lösen kann. Die trotz ihres aufreibenden Alltags mit 4 Kindern, Ex-Mann, Mutter und div. Geliebten alles irgendwie managt („Eins, zwei…!“). Es gibt Szenen, über die wir uns amüsieren – Familiendebakel, Büroalltag, perfide Kollegen, die auf die Nase fallen. Es gibt aber auch richtig brutale Szenen, die Teil des Jobs als Commandant bei der Mordkommission sind … Und außerdem bewegt sich Candice immer mal wieder am Rande der Legalität, was zu speziellen Schwierigkeiten mit Dienstaufsicht und Staatsanwaltschaft führt.

Ja – etwas zur Entspannung und zum Runterkommen nach dem Alltagsstress!
