Il Commissario Looking for Love
Franco De Santis is a commissario in Naples. He is intelligent and has a storybook career ahead of him, which began when he married Isabella and her father paved the way for him. Franco doesn’t know about it, or at least doesn’t want to know; he trusts that he got his promotion through his conscientious work.
Isabella’s family is rich and the young couple, though not quite so young now, live in a large, luxurious flat in one of Naples’ posh districts. Franco enjoys this life and adores his wife and daughter. It does hit him that he has to move out and henceforth eke out an existence in a small attic – a temporary separation, he thinks. He is soon confronted with reality: his wife is divorcing him and has a new partner at her side who comes from the same wealthy class in Naples as her family.
For Franco, a world comes crashing down, especially as he also notices that his daughter is distancing herself from him more and more. He can’t obviously keep up when it comes to gifts …
It sounds like this is a tragic romance novel, but it is a crime series. Franco’s private fate forms the background for his professional life, in which he has to deal with murder cases and which runs like a thread through the novels.

When talking about southern Italy (or Sicily), one immediately thinks of those special families who have unofficial control over certain areas or neighbourhoods to do their business. These influences also play a role – and Franco often has to make an effort not to lose his balance and not to let his real goal, the solving of a murder, go down the drain. After all, he has a very special connection to those honourable fellows, which he uses unofficially from time to time to get advice and information.
In his cases, Franco encounters machinations of the Catholic Church, or rather of a special incumbent who uses his power and connections to … He dives into teenage worlds and discovers deaths that were first swept under the table … And finally he gets to deal with the art world – on Capri, where else.
It always remains interesting and probably there will soon be new cases with new entanglements, intrigues, the eternal daily business with bribery, politics …
And privately?
Franco sees light on the horizon, because after a brief affair he seems to have met a woman who finds him very attractive. Here, too, new twists are to be expected …

Franco De Santis ist Commissario in Neapel. Er ist intelligent und hat eine Bilderbuchkarriere vor sich, die damit begann, dass er Isabella heiratete und deren Vater den Weg ebnete. Franco weiß nichts davon oder will es zumindest nicht wissen; er vertraut drauf, dass er seine Beförderung durch seine gewissenhafte Arbeit bekommen hat.
Isabellas Familie ist reich und das junge Paar, wenn auch inzwischen nicht mehr ganz so jung, lebt in einer großen, luxuriösen Wohnung in einem der Nobelviertel Neapels. Franco genießt dieses Leben und vergöttert seine Frau und seine Tochter. Es trifft ihn schon, dass er ausziehen und fortan in einer kleinen Mansarde sein Dasein fristen muss – eine Trennung auf Zeit, denkt er. Ganz schnell wird er mit der Realität konfrontiert: seine Frau betreibt die Scheidung und hat einen neuen Partner an ihrer Seite, der aus der gleichen wohlhabenden Schicht Neapels stammt.
Für Franco bricht eine Welt zusammen, zumal er auch merkt, dass sich seine Tochter mehr und mehr von ihm entfernt. Er kann nicht mithalten, was Geschenke betrifft …
Es hört sich so an, als ob es sich um einen tragischen Liebesroman handelt, aber es ist eine Krimi-Serie. Das private Schicksal von Franco bildet den Hintergrund für sein berufliches Leben, in dem er sich mit Mordfällen beschäftigen muss, und zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Romane.
Franco ist ein gewissenhafter Polizist, der versucht mit seinem kleinen Team alle Fälle zu klären, die auf seinem Schreibtisch landen. Es sind nicht gerade wenige – und meist sind einflussreiche Menschen und Familien involviert, denen nicht unbedingt daran gelegen ist, Licht ins Dunkel zu bringen. Es wird Druck ausgeübt …
Wenn von Süditalien (oder Sizilien) die Rede ist, denkt man sofort an jene speziellen Familien, die die inoffizielle Kontrolle über bestimmte Gebiet oder Stadtteile haben, um dort ihren Geschäften nachzugehen. Auch diese Einflüsse spielen ein Rolle – und Franco muss sich oft anstrengen, um nicht die Balance zu verlieren und sein eigentliches Ziel, die Aufklärung eines Mordes, nicht untergehen zu lassen. immerhin hat er eine ganz spezielle Verbindung zu jenen ehrenwerten Mitmenschen, die er inoffiziell ab und zu nutzt, um sich Rat und Informationen zu holen.
In seinen Fällen trifft Franco auf Machenschaften der katholischen Kirche, besser gesagt: eines speziellen Amtsinhabers, der seine Macht und seine Beziehungen nutzt, um … Er taucht ab in Teenager-Welten und entdeckt Todesfälle, die erst einmal unter den Tisch gekehrt wurden … Und schließlich bekommt er es mit der Kunstwelt zu tun – auf Capri, wo auch sonst.
Es bleibt immer interessant und wahrscheinlich wird es bald neue Fälle mit neuen Verflechtungen, Intrigen, dem ewigen Tagesgeschäft mit Bestechung, Politik … geben.
Und privat?
Franco sieht Licht am Horizont, denn nach einer kurzen Affaire scheint er eine Frau kennengelernt zu haben, die ihn sehr anziehend findet. Auch hier sind neue Wendungen zu erwarten …
