Als Staatsanwältin darf Chastity Riley überall mitmischen, vor allem bei jedem Mordfall und speziell bei den schrägen Mordfällen, den grausigen Tötungen, den unschuldigen Opfern – und sie lässt keine Gelegenheit aus, im Sumpf herumzuwühlen. Sie kompensiert die Grausamkeiten, mit denen sie konfrontiert wird, durch Alkohol. Im Übrigen ist sie in den 40ern, Single, St. Pauli-Fan und in der verruchten Gegend von Hamburg ansässig – St. Pauli, Reeperbahn, Große Freiheit … Ab und zu gibt es einen One-Night-Stand mit dem gleichen Partner oder anderen. Sie möchte alle gern retten und die Missetäter hinter Gitter bringen, was nicht immer gelingt. In ihrem eigene, unnachahmlichen Stil teilt Chastity uns alles mit. Man braucht nicht erst zu erwähnen, dass sie bei ihren Kollegen und auch bei manchen Kriminalbeamten nicht die beliebteste ist, aber sie kann Erfolge vorweisen.

She compensates for the cruelties she is confronted with by drinking. Incidentally, she is in her 40s, single, a St. Pauli football club fan and a resident of the wicked area of Hamburg i. e. St. Pauli, Reeperbahn, Große Freiheit … Every now and then there is a one-night stand with the same partner or others. She would like to save everyone and put the wrongdoers behind bars, which doesn’t always work out. In her own inimitable style, Chastity tells us everything. Needless to say, she is not the most popular with her colleagues or even with some detectives, but she has a record of success.

Eine getriebene Persönlichkeit
Chastity Riley ist in den 40ern und Single. Die Liebe ist ihr großes Problem. Ihr Vater hat ihre Mutter unendlich geliebt – und als ihn seine Frau verließ und mit einem Kleinkind zurückließ, war er für den Rest seines Lebens gebrochen. Er setzte seinem Leben etwa zwanzig Jahre später selbst ein Ende.
Chastity hat diesen unendlichen Schmerz ihres Vaters all die Jahre miterlebt, als sie heranwuchs. Sie war am Boden zerstört, als sie die Leiche ihres Vaters fand. Liebe war für sie, erst recht nach diesem Ereignis, die schwierigste Sache der Welt. Abstand halten ist für sie die natürlichste Sache der Welt geworden.
Natürlich gibt es den einen oder anderen Mann, zu dem sie sich hingezogen fühlt, aber es reicht nie für ein wirkliches Zusammenleben. Ihr fehlt der Mut, sie hat Angst. Daher bevorzugt sie auch One-Night-Stands oder lockere Beziehungen ohne den nächsten Schritt zu tun. Sie gibt sich große Mühe damit.
Chastity ist Staatsanwältin geworden und beschäftigt sich mit den richtig schmutzigen Verbrechen, die es in Hamburg gibt. Diese Fälle landen alle auf ihrem Schreibtisch. Das sorgt immer für eine Menge Arbeit. Es sieht nie so aus, als ob sich viel Ruhm mit der Bearbeitung und der Aufklärung ernten lässt, aber Chastity wühlt sich durch jeden Dreckhaufen, immer in der Hoffnung, dass der Täter bestraft werden kann und dass die Unschuldigen nicht mehr leiden müssen als unbedingt notwendig. Sie ist immer auf diesem Gerechtigkeitspfad und lässt nicht locker.
Das geht nicht immer gut. Manchmal wühlt Chastity etwas zu viel Dreck auf und etablierte Persönlichkeiten werden nervös – oder gar vernommen, gar nicht zu reden von einer Anklage. Dann kann es schon mal passieren, dass Chastity kurzfristig versetzt wird. Aber schon bald ist sie zurück in ihrem Element …
Chastity erzählt in den Romane über sich und ihre Fälle. Sie tut es in einer sehr eigenwilligen Sprache, manchmal unhöflich, manchmal krass und grausam, aber es passt zu ihrem Leben und ihrer Arbeit. (Schon allein die Sprache macht die Romane lesenswert.)
Der Fokus liegt auf ihr selbst und ihren Gefühlen. Die Fälle sind fast schon zweitrangig. Daher passiert es auch, dass Fälle unaufgeklärt bleiben oder zumindest nicht in einen Status kommen, der eine Anklage erlaubt. Allein Chastity hat für sich den Durchblick und kennt – oder ahnt zumindest – die Wahrheit. Sie weiß, dass sie sich damit begnügen muss, aber sie kann eigentlich nicht wirklich loslassen.
Die Kriminalpolizei hat ein gespaltenes Verhältnis zu Chastity. Es gibt Ermittler, die lieben sie, vergöttern sie, möchten immer wieder mit ihr arbeiten und geben ihr tiefe Einblicke in die aktuelle Lage – und es gibt andere, die gehen lieber auf Abstand. Chastity ist es meist egal, denn sie tut eh, was sie will – und treibt die Polizei ab und zu vor sich her.
Chastity ist ein Fan von St. Pauli und lebt in dieser Gegend von Hamburg, nicht gerade eine Nobelgegend. Sie liebt all diese Loser, denen sie begegnet, mit denen sie trinken kann. Alkohol ist Chastitys bester Freund. Sie hat ihre Stammkneipen und jeder weiß, dass sie gern mehr trinkt als ihr gut tut. Auch ihre Freunde bei der Polizei wissen das, trinken aber gern mit ihr zusammen, bis alle quasi unterm Tisch liegen.
Im Grunde hat Chastity viele Freunde, auch wenn sie in ihrer Wohnung immer allein ist und bleiben möchte. Vielleicht ist es auch einfacher, wenn sie morgens mal wieder mit Kopfschmerzen und Übelkeit aufwacht, weil sie letzte Nacht zu viel getrunken hat. Meist meldet sich das Telefon, wenn sie sich in die Küche schleppt … um sie zu einem Tatort zu rufen. Das ist ihr Startschuss …
A Driven Character
Chastity Riley is in her 40s and single. Love is her big problem. Her father loved her mother without limits – and when his wife left him with a toddler, he was broken for the rest of his life. He put an end to his life himself some twenty years later.
Chastity has witnessed this unending pain of her father all these years as she grew up. She was devastated when she found her father’s body. Love was the most difficult thing in the world for her, even more so after that event. Keeping distance has become the most natural thing in the world for her.
Of course there is a man -or another – she is attracted to, but it is never enough for a real life together i. e. a real, lasting relationship. She lacks courage, she is afraid. That’s why she prefers one-night stands or casual relationships without taking the next step. She puts a lot of effort into this.
Chastity has become a public prosecutor and deals with the really dirty crimes that exist in Hamburg. These cases all end up on her desk. That always makes for a lot of work. It never looks like there is much glory to be earned in handling and solving them, but Chastity digs through every pile of dirt, always hoping that the perpetrator can be punished and that the innocent don’t have to suffer any more than absolutely necessary. She is always on that path of justice and never lets up.
That doesn’t always go well. Sometimes Chastity stirs up a little too much dirt and established personalities get nervous – or even interrogated, not to mention impeached. Then it can happen that Chastity is transferred at short notice. But soon she is back in her element …
Chastity talks about herself and her cases in the novels. She does it in a very idiosyncratic language, sometimes rude, sometimes crass and cruel, but it fits her life and her work. (The language alone makes the novels worth reading).
The focus is on herself and her feelings. The cases are almost secondary. Hence, it also happens that cases remain unsolved or at least do not reach a status that allows for charges to be brought. Chastity alone has the perspective and knows – or at least suspects – the truth. She knows she has to make do, but she can’t really let go.
The criminal police have a split relationship with Chastity. There are investigators who love her, idolise her, want to work with her again and again and give her deep insights into the current situation – and there are others who prefer to keep their distance. Chastity mostly doesn’t care, because she does what she wants anyway – and drives the police before her from time to time.
Chastity is a fan of St. Pauli, the local football club, and lives in this area of Hamburg, not exactly a posh area. She loves all these losers she meets, who she can drink with. Alcohol is Chastity’s best friend. She has her regular pubs and everyone knows that she likes to drink more than is good for her. Her friends in the police force know this too, but they like to drink with her until they are all practically under the table.
Basically, Chastity has a lot of friends, even if she is always alone in her flat and wants to stay that way. Maybe it’s easier when she wakes up in the morning with a headache and nausea because she drank too much last night. Usually the phone rings when she drags herself into the kitchen … to call her to a crime scene. That is her starting signal …
