An Englishman in Italy
Daniel Leicester ends up in Italy, in Bologna, because he married an Italian and both moved from London to Bologna. At first it isn’t more than an extended holiday, but soon they are part of the extended family – and they stay. Daniel is now fluently in Italian.
His wife died in a car accident and Daniel stayed together with his teenage daughter. He lives in a house together with his father-in-law and lots of relatives. Almost all of them are incorporated in the family business – and of course also Daniel starts working for the business.
Daniel’s father-in-law was once a prominent head at the police. Then he left and founded a company for security and investigations. All went well … however, now the business crumbles … slowly. Daniel seems not so happy with it, but he has no option but co-operate. Especially his daughter is now more Italian than British.
Daniel masters his life and makes a mark as a private investigator. Being English …. British seems somehow an advantage. Also life is Italian life: more colorful, more easy, better food … more enjoying anything. In short: Daniel isn’t unhappy.
His father-in-law has connections and is a capable networker. He knows anybody as it seems and anybody likes to oblige him. So there are cases … Mostly it starts like a family affair when somebody out of a large Italian family goes lost – or worse turns up as a corpse in the morgue. The family of the passed away is mourning, however, also asking … and they ask Daniel’s father-in-law how he could help. Now Daniel comes in.
The investigations are not easy, but in most cases lead into a mess of lies, assumptions, vengeance – and there is also the police, both police forces of Italy who don’t like any amateur mingling in their area of control. Clashes are inevitable, even if Daniels father-in-law may know hoe to pull strings. The cases always lead to serious scheming and more crime – not perceptible at the beginning.
The novels not only unravel the interconnections and interdependencies of Italian society and administration, but let us also share in daily life and Italian lifestyle. It’s fun although we are looking at the dark side of society and life.
