Kayankaya … a Turk … as the Name already Suggests

On 11 August 1983, Kemal Kayankaya turns 26. He has been working as a private investigator in Frankfurt for three years. He was born in Turkey … after his mother died during childbirth, his father moved to Frankfurt, where he died three years later. Kemal was then adopted and became a German citizen – officially, he has German citizenship and speaks Turkish, or … well, he speaks fluent German without an accent.

After graduating from high school and studying for a few semesters, he decided to become a private detective and has since been waiting in a small, run-down office for clients who occasionally find their way to him. His reputation has grown after a few difficult cases that made headlines, but he hasn’t become rich as a result. In any case, it’s enough for a ramshackle flat and enough coffee and whisky on daily base …

Later, everything will be better… there will be a partner, a presentable flat, the alcohol will have disappeared … a certain amount of prosperity will spread …

But on that birthday in 1983, Kayankaya is still a long way from that. Luckily for him, a client walks into his office and gives him an assignment and a 1,000 DM note. Just to clarify: there is no euro yet, there is no mobile phone service, and the internet for everyone has not yet seen the light of day … Investigative work is mainly legwork and relying on contacts. Even Kayankaya has a few.

Frankfurt’s reputation at that time is … shady. There is the notorious red-light district, where Kayankaya repeatedly ends up during his investigations. There is the world of the powerful people in business and politics, who all seem to have something to hide – in other words, skeletons in the closet. There is the police force, whose organisation certainly has its bad apples and hides them. There is crime and also organised crime. Kayankaya repeatedly encounters opponents who often simply want to eliminate him.

Nevertheless, Kayankaya does not give up. When he has a job to do, he sees it through to the end, no matter what – even if he gets beaten up or suffers serious injuries more than once. In the end, everything is revealed, even if it does not initially appear that there is more to some cases than meets the eye, that powerful people are involved, that the police are not acting openly …

On top of that, Kayankaya is Turkish. His name and appearance ensure that he is always quickly identified as Turkish. Even in the 1980s, German citizens are not prepared for the fact that Kayankaya is not only German, but also speaks better German than they do. Kayankaya is self-confident and goes his own way, even if it leads him through the mud and into the gutter – better not to ask what his opponents look like after a spirited encounter.

Kayankaya is … a “hard-boiled detective”? He could also be active in Los Angeles or San Francisco – with a few adjustments to the milieu and his background. His distinctive style predestines him to be a German version of the legendary “private eyes”.
