A Couple with Inclination for Adventure

I learnt about Tommy and Tuppence when watching the Tv series. It’s a recent series, but it reminded me somehow of the screwball comedies which flourished decades ago. Of course it’s a crime series with murder and whatever is assumed to be part of a criminal investigation, but there is also always a hint of humor and airiness when both get active.

The creator of the merry couple is Agatha Christie. I read some of the novels after having watched the Tv series – and in the novels the world isn’t so easy to handle as in the Tv series. However, the adventures of Tommy and Tuppence are far from Nordic Noir or any hard-boiled PI stories.

Both meet during WWI without happening anything – and then once again after WWI when they are financially broken. Spontaneously they decide to set up an agency for private investigations – and soon they are involved in some shady business. Also there are leading them to meet MI5 people and work on spy affairs … During the decades between WWI and WWII there are lots of strange operations in Great Britain. It continues during WWII and even afterwards … although there are also more private cases they investigate.

The Tv series captures some of the novels and adapts the plot somehow … a little. Tommy and Tuppence are real nice people who can be dangerous when they think that there is some foul play around … up to murder. Tuppence is somehow smarter than Tommy – my opinion – which isn’t self-evident when thinking about the time and the fact that Tuppence is a woman.

At the end both manage to survive and have some substantial income to live off.
