The Shadow of his Wife

Roy Grace should be a happy man.

He lives in Brighton at the seaside, has a nice home and his job as Head of Major Crimes at the police in Brighton makes sure that he is involved in any serious crime around him. He is a thoroughbred police officer and loves his job. Any crime may be complex and knotty, but Grace will solve the case.

The cases range from murder to kidnapping, from fraud to extortion and much more. Often it starts rather simply and innocently – well of course mostly with a corpse – rather soon the case seems to explode. There are many people involved, there are more corpses or other cruelties, there are misleading trails, there are close-lipped witnesses or otherwise involved parties – in short: there is always rather soon a big mess. Grace and his team have to sort it out painstakingly and sometimes … Grace resorts to strange, uncommon methods to clarify open ends or dead ends.

So far it seems the right man is on the right job. Also there are women in his life …, but …

Grace’s wife disappeared some years ago, vanished into thin air. For quite a while the case is unsolved. Well … for several years the case is open. No hints whatever happened. Without revealing too much: the disappearance of Grace’s wife will be cleared up – finally.

However, for long years there is a shadow of suspicion hovering over Grace’s head. It seems that the marriage wasn’t so fine as possible. Maybe there were other men … other women. Grace isn’t fired because there is no evidence incriminating him, but there is always some doubt.

Grace himself takes action at times when he thinks that there is a new lead … However, all is in vain. Maybe he comes near to his wife and her secret … Obviously she or whoever are successful in letting him groping in the dark.

Grace’s life isn’t easy because his missing wife means also that he is still married, interrupting any attempts to regain a life with a woman near him. It costs years until he is able to apply for a death certificate of his wife.

All this personal tragedy is most of the time overruled by crime cases of extraordinary complexity as well as cruelty. A beautiful seaside resort like Brighton is obviously a hotbed of crime involving residents as well as tourists, poor people as well as rich businessman …

When reading the novels you may always expect a tricky case with lots of action.
