Crime and a Small Village
Ellie Miller is a DS (Detective Sergeant) at Wessex Police in Broadchurch, a small town at the south coast of England. There is a wide beach with scenic cliffs, waves thundering along the sand, lots of fresh air. The delinquency rate is low … serious crime seems far away. It seems an idyllic world.
Ellie lived in Broadchurch for her entire life. She is married and has got two children. She is tender-hearted and popular with her neighbors … like all around the town. When returning from a holiday she is in joyful anticipation of re-starting her professional life … when suddenly out of the blue she has to face that she was ignored despite of any commitments. She will not become Detective Inspector (DI), but there is a DI from another area who during her holiday was appointed to the job. Ellie is furious, but she has to back down.
Alec Hardy is the new master of disaster in Broadchurch. He is a DI and was transferred to Broadchurch because of some serious mismanagement in the case of a double murder. Also his wife and daughter stay behind and he is ill and has a serious heart condition which he likes to keep back. In general he is ill-tempered and likes to bawl at anybody. Ellie isn’t amused. They start fighting from the first encounter on.
Their first encounter is at the beach on a crime scene. The corpse of a boy was found – and quite soon it’s obvious that it’s a murder case. Alec and Ellie have to co-operate, but they have a job to do it. Alec doesn’t know anybody in Broadchurch and is in cold blood. Ellie, however, is deeply touched. The murdered boy lived next door with his family, he was a close friend of her elder son.
During the next weeks the investigation only makes slow progress. Next to the work of the police and especially Alec’s and Ellie’s bumping co-operation their personal life takes a wide role as well as the life in Broadchurch in general and especially prospective evildoers – all is interlaced from day to day, from week to week. There are lots of dead ends. People like to fall silent or at least don’t disclose the whole truth – mainly out of very personal feeling or fears.
Finally there is a lead – and there is a confession. It leaves Ellie devastated because the perpetrator is very close to her. Her world collapses.
The story continues once again representing not only the crime, but also the influence on Broadchurch and its inhabitants. There is a new turn when the perpetrator suddenly pleads “non-guilty” at court. From now on there is a battle between lawyers and prosecutors. Be sure that any actions, also if seeming insignificant, of the police, of Alec and Ellie, of any witnesses … will come under extreme scrutinizing. Pressure increases on all parties.
At the same time Alec’s past actions, his mismanagement of the investigation of the double-murder case before he was transferred to Broadchurch, gain some drive. Ellie having recovered slowly working now as a Detective Constable (DC) co-operates with Alec to investigate once more the old case – and they find new leads which finally solve the case.
And the Broadchurch murder?
There is a solution, but it’s fishy. Some people of Broadchurch take the matters in their own hands …
Time flies – Alec and Ellie are a team and there are more crimes … to be investigated, to be finished … Broadchurch hasn’t forgot the murder case of boy at the beach as well as the court hearing. Will it ever?
The Tv series “Broadchurch” conveys a comprehensive view and chronicle of a murder and its consequences for the investigation, the families, the perpetrator, the inhabitants of the town, related crime cases and immense suffering of anybody involved.
