Nights, Freezing Atmosphere, Dreary Days … Blazing Sun, Cold Water …

Karppi and Nurmi rush through Helsinki and its outskirts and beyond – always trying to reach a crime scene, analyzing the victims, looking for witnesses of any kind, discussing base motives, arresting evildoers or dismissing them after new evidence suddenly appears, defending possible victims – always as if driven by a Deadwind.

Their life is a whirlwind of action, jumbling professional tasks and private obligations. The background of all this roller coaster chase is mainly Helsinki from luxurious mansions to decrepit high-rise apartment complexes, from clean and stylish minimalistic offices to filthy storage sheds. In between there is alcohol, there are drugs, there is human trafficking, blackmail, political concerns, career options, new technologies … and lots of money.

Karppi is widowed with two children. Her husband was killed in an accident when they lived in Hamburg. Karppi returned to Finland shortly after the tragedy. Later it’s revealed that it wasn’t an accident, but murder – or at least manslaughter. Her kids are not happy with returning to Helsinki where they live among moving boxes because Karppi starts working in the murder squad in Helsinki as soon as possible. many a colleague thinks it’s much too early for her to investigate ruthless crime after her personal tragedy. Obviously her professional life is important for her, sometimes it seems more important than her family.

Her (step-)daughter, a teenager on the brink of adulthood, is devastated and looks for friends and finds alcohol and drugs and … more fishy behavior at school by schoolmates. It’s predictable that she’ll get into trouble – and she will and prison is also waiting … Karppi seems helpless about her daughter. Her younger son is more the apple of her eye, but yet she neglects him in favor of her job.

As stated before her job is the centre point of her life. Karppi is devoted to solve crimes and she’s got some sixth sense for murder and other serious crimes. She ponders about the victims and the evidence and always draws her very own conclusions which are not obvious to the rest of the team. Also this always leads to solo efforts by Karppi to complete the list of evidence or capture an alleged evildoer. So she tends to manoeuver herself into dangerous settings, life-threatening encounters with the evil side of life.

Finally this is the moment when Nurmi gets into action. He is single with many one-night-stands as it seems. Once a woman of his recent past presents a baby boy to him claiming that he is the father. At first Nurmi is dismissive, however, finally he accepts his son – although DNA shows that it isn’t his son. He knows that Karppi at first isn’t fond of heaving him as her partner, but Nurmi is stubborn – and bit by bit they come to arrangements. If nothing else it’s Nurmi who saves Karppi on her solos – and who also cares about her kids, even if his activities uncover the crimes of Karppi’s daughter.

When watching the series it’s not so obvious where the line between justice and injustice runs. There are crimes, especially murder cases, cruel cases where victims are tortured. There are cases of self-defense, spontaneous decisions to resort to violence in order to save one’s life, one’s hope for future, one’s career … There are powerful companies with their very own agenda, to all intents and purposes beyond the line, but always in silence and darkness. There are politicians who bend the rules and hope for getting away with white-collar crimes.

In the thick of this mess there are also other perpetrators who indulge in killing or starting a campaign of vengeance. At this point when a serial killer seems to be active Karppi is challenged to unravel the thick levels of facts and fiction the evildoer has spread – and Nurmi is challenged to bring Karppi down to earth when she follows dubious evidence. Sometimes also innocents like Karppi’s kids get involved when a perpetrator realizes his limits and likes to create an impressive bloody departure.

Nordic Noir: Deadwind is an example for a series of action and cruel reality in a modern city.
