Joe Jessen, a Psychiatrier and the World of Crime
Michael Robotham created the psychiatrist Joseph O’Loughlin, who lives in London and deals with severely disturbed psychiatric patients. There is always an act of violence lurking somewhere and a police investigation … a conviction. Joseph is involved in everything.
The series was moved from London to Hamburg and Joseph O’Loughlin became Joe Jessen, a German psychiatrist working in the same environment – and the novels became episodes of a TV series.
I admit that I haven’t read any of the novels yet, but have only watched the TV series “Neben der Spur”, which forms the basis for this article.
Dr Johannes Jessen, known as Joe Jessen, is a psychiatrist who specialises in expert opinions in criminal cases, especially when it comes to perpetrators who are characterised by violence and brutality. Joe is repeatedly involved in murder cases, gruesome murders with devastating consequences … not only because his patients are victims, perpetrators and suspects, but also because he himself and his family become the targets of psychopaths. His life, which is already not easy due to his creeping Parkinson’s disease, becomes increasingly difficult and stressful, especially when his wife and daughter are threatened and their lives are at stake. Without giving anything away, his marriage breaks down and his relationship with his daughter becomes difficult.
The individual cases show that people with extreme psychological dispositions succeed in forcing their way into families, disrupting peaceful communities and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Only after intensive research by Joe Jessen does it slowly become clear who we are dealing with.
Joe Jessen is drawn into these investigations. It turns out that decisions and judgements he has made in the past and put down on paper have consequences. Even criminals have families and here too there are ideas for revenge … directed at Joe Jessen.
In each episode, we are immersed in a German world that is both familiar and strange at the same time. Everything seems to be surrounded by gloom, even when the sun is shining.
