A Woman in Full
La señorita Flores, Isabel, Bel … in her early 30s is the daughter of a highly esteemed detective at Policia National and the niece of a renowned investigative journalist – both are twins. So Bel decided to start a career at Policia National and due to her hereditary make-up became a successful detective working on murder, abduction … in Madrid and later in Palma. Unfortunately her father died some years ago heartbroken because of the mysterious disappearance of his brother who worked on disclosures about domestic terrorism, international drug syndicates and more.
Somewhat later Bel decided to quit Policia National because she also couldn’t deal with the investigation into her uncle showing no results – and because of distress with all the cruel cases she had to tackle. Bel was not only successful in her job, but also popular with her colleagues and the superiors – all regretted her departure.
Well, there was another reason for Bel to start a new life. Her mother was devastated by the death of her husband and needed comfort and help with her renting business of holiday cottages around the bay of Sóller and in the adjoining Tramuntana mountains. So Bel came home to her native village, rolled up her sleeves and started re-defining the family business. Of course it was a success story. Bel has got now one of the most valued renting businesses in the area with managing a small staff of cleaners, laundresses, handymen – and an assistant, a handsome young man, caring for the office and all the usual booking affairs … whenever Bel is busy with other events and projects.
What else?
Bel is single and she is happy about it although she knows that the biological clock is ticking. Her former boss at Policia National in Palma is a good friend who turns into her lover, but Bel isn’t sure about moving in together, marrying … She loves her home which she shares with a ferret – both like to do an early morning swim in the Mediterranean Sea, on daily basis. There are also a cockerel and some hens. Also she loves her small yellow Fiat 500 and … her grand motorbike, a present from her lover. Her mother gets back on her feet and starts a deep friendship with Bel’s neighbor, the village’s doctor. Alongside her mother is a brilliant cook and spoils her daughter with first class homemade food. Not to mention that Bel is best friends with all the people in her village …
In short Bel has a wonderful life filling her days non-stop, especially when talking into account all the ongoing troubles in the village requiring her advice and often her mediation. So the mayor likes to discuss all the village affairs with her …
Then there is a little girl missing … an English girl who disappears from a public beach when her mother is busy to pay their bill at a beach restaurant, just not having an eye on her daughter for some minutes. At once it becomes a real big case for searching and investigating … The superiors remember Bel – and ask her if she likes to work as a consultant for the homicide squad in Palma concerning this case and her background experience with such cases.
Bel is enthusiastic and jumps on the bandwagon … she solves the case … alongside she deals with another case … drugs trafficking on international level … However, she doesn’t want to go back to Policia National. She remains a consultant … laying the basis for further investigations whenever there is a spectacular crime on Majorca.
Her main counterpart is her lover and his team – she knows all of them. She likes to investigate on her own, following tiny leads which turn out to be crucial at the end. Of course she often challenges her limits and sometimes it gets dangerous – and she ends up in a clinic for some hours. Her young assistent is fascinated and likes to help whenever possible. Also her friends in the village like to consult her … sometimes petty crime turns out to be only a part of a sophisticated crime project …
In all novels so far Bel has always to deal with at least two cases, one coming in via Policia National, one arising in her neighborhood. Each time you are involved in the colorful Majorcan life and especially Majorcan food feasts. Life is simple and great on Majorca – you’ll like to pack your bags, book a flight and enjoy and relax the Mediterranean life.
