Snow and Ice and Murder …
Siglufjörður is Iceland’s northernmost town, which is almost completely cut off from the outside world in winter when snow and ice cover the roads. There is a tunnel, but it is very narrow and outdated, and is often impassable in winter. Then, at last, a new access route to this small town is being built: a new, modern tunnel. The town’s accessibility will be significantly improved and its isolation reduced, opening a route for tourists.
Ari Thór Arason applies for a job at the small police station in this remote part of Iceland as soon as he completes his training at the police academy in Reykjavík. He makes his decision spontaneously, probably without being aware of the consequences. He has a girlfriend and they have a small child together. His girlfriend is not enthusiastic, because her life and her job are in Reykjavík. In the long term, the relationship seems doomed to failure from the outset – and that is how it will turn out.
What is happening in Siglufjörður?
It is a sleepy town where nothing serious ever seems to happen, as Ari’s new boss explains from the outset. This is also due to its isolation. But suddenly there are dead bodies – and the new access road to the town means more people are coming to the area, which also means more crime.
There are bloody family affairs, there are events in the past that suddenly trigger violent acts, there are plans for revenge, there are cases of abuse… People can be quite cruel at the end of the world in Iceland. Ari quickly learns that the idyllic appearance of the small town is deceptive.
Crimes are always crimes, whether in a metropolis or a remote village. People have ambitions, they are greedy… People are killed… not in very complicated ways, but however it happens and whatever is at hand. One person is beaten to death, another is shot, people are thrown off cliffs … Ari always has his hands full with investigative work – and it always remains exciting.
Alongside his professional challenges, there is his private life, which for a long time is still dominated by his girlfriend, even though they live apart. At the same time, there are new women in his life, there is the child, and there are breakups … It is not so easy to juggle all these private challenges. Ari loves his little son, but the distance to Reykjavík and later to Sweden, where his girlfriend eventually moves, makes him a stranger to him.
In the end, after a few years, Ari is nevertheless happy in Siglufjörður. He has no plans to return to Reykjavík or any other larger city in Iceland.
… and you can be sure that new complex criminal cases will also arise in the far north of Iceland. It’s not for nothing that the series is called “Dark Iceland” …
