A Man of Refined Taste

Allmen, Johannes Friedrich von Allmen, was raised into a world of luxury. His father skilfully and astutely amassed a fortune, which Allmen simply inherited – he inherited it and spent it to create and enjoy his very own world of Good Life: travel, beautiful hotels, good food, tailor-made suits and handmade shoes … Unfortunately, however, the inherited fortune dwindled away and Allmen was forced to earn a living, i.e. to sell off his assets one after another and eventually even to work.

He sold his villa in Zurich, but his garden pavilion remained. There he lives among remaining fine furniture and antiques. From time to time, he has to part with a cherished treasure … from time to time, he takes a short trip, visits an antique shop and buys a little something, whereby another little something happens to end up in his coat pocket, which he sells to a trustworthy dealer. Sometimes he also helps himself to something in a private estate …

… and then a murder happens.

Allmen reluctantly allows himself to be drawn into the events. Things become interesting for him when he learns that his last theft was from a previous burglary and that, even after all these years, there is still a not inconsiderable insurance payout for the replacement. So Allmen sets to work with his characteristic acumen – and he succeeds.

Even though he can solve his acute financial problems with the reward money, i.e. his current debts are paid off and he can buy a new grand piano, his situation has not improved in the medium or long term. So Allmen decides to work.

He founds a company that focuses on tracking down stolen or lost art treasures and antiques, as well as other valuable items: The Art of Tracing Art. It is a one-man show. Allmen can use all his contacts in his world of money, luxury and the still-existing aristocracy and always finds a small case. Thanks to his intelligence, his sharp conclusions and, last but not least, his intimate knowledge of the milieu, Allmen is successful, but it is still not enough for a carefree life, as Allmen was accustomed to in earlier years. Nevertheless, he enjoys it.

Even though his company appears to be an international enterprise, thanks in part to Allmen’s impressive language skills, it consists solely of him. Well … that’s not entirely true. There is also Carlos. Carlos is from Guatemala and lives in Switzerland illegally, meaning he has no residence permit. Allmen met him in Antigua when he was visiting friends there. Carlos asked Allmen if he could take him to Switzerland. Allmen needed someone for his villa … and so Carlos accompanied him as a tourist and from then on worked as a gardener for Allmen – primarily. He simply stayed in the country and continued to care for Allmen. After Allmen had to move into his garden pavilion, Carlos remained as a paid gardener and caretaker for the new owners, a trust company, but lived with Allmen and took care of everything.

Carlos is a valet, cook, gardener, caretaker … he knows his way around computers and the internet … and takes care of Allmen in every way. Allmen is almost helpless without him. Carlos is still in Switzerland illegally, but he is happy because his salary allows him to support his family in Guatemala.

As a personal assistant, Carlos also works in Allmen’s investigation office and always has good, practical ideas. He also meets Maria from Colombia, who is also in Switzerland illegally, through a special case, which makes him even happier. Carlos ensures that Maria is taken on as an additional employee in Allmen’s small household … and everything turns out well for Carlos.

Even though it sounds as if Allmen’s cases are always solved through the use of ingenuity, it is often dangerous for Allmen and Carlos. There is always a lot of money at stake, a lot of passion, and very rich people in particular have their own ideas about law and justice when it comes to their property. As a result, Allmen and Carlos repeatedly find themselves in dangerous situations, get injured, wake up in hospital … and there are also repeated deaths that Allmen has to deal with.

Well … Carlos and Maria … what about Allmen’s love life?
Allmen meets beautiful women and enjoys his time with them, beautiful women come and go …

When reading about Allmen’s adventures, we are immersed in a world that is very exquisite. There is a lot of money and luxury around – and surely everyone dreams of flying south in a private jet or enjoying life in a suite at a top hotel on the Baltic Sea with a private beach. Let’s not forget the good food and wines … and the idleness. Murder: Murder is cruel and bloody even in this setting, and it is investigated – by Allmen, when it concerns him …
