Politics, Secret Service, Police and Crime
Juncker and Signe worked together for many years – in the homicide division of the Copenhagen police force. Then their paths diverged. Juncker behaved improperly in a case and began an affair … with the defence lawyer … which of course came to light … and he would have consequences … Juncker quickly transferred himself to a vacant position in Sandsted, somewhere in the countryside. Signe remained in Copenhagen.
Signe is married with teenage children and has been unhappy for some time. She has had problems with her marriage and her husband since she was raped – and didn’t tell anyone about it. She has been working in the police force long enough to know that as a victim she is fighting a losing battle – especially since the perpetrator is also a police officer. Otherwise, she is happy with her job, enjoys investigating criminal cases, especially murder cases, and has a keen instinct for solving cases. She also thinks intensively about how she can bring her rapist to justice.
Juncker’s marriage, with children who are almost grown up, falls apart after his affair. This is another reason why Juncker sees his salvation in the small police station in Sandsted, where just two colleagues are waiting for him. He also comes from this small town. His father still lives there – and has dementia. Juncker also sees this as an opportunity to look after his father. Basically, he also has to take care of himself, because he is not in particularly good health, but he does not want to admit this, as he is in the throes of a mid-life crisis.
Juncker and Signe are two investigators who are not only busy with their cases, but also have a lot going on in their private lives. Their private activities and experiences take up a lot of space alongside their cases – and things often get mixed up very quickly.
It all begins with a big bang: a terrorist attack in Copenhagen. Signe is fully involved, but Juncker is initially too far away from Copenhagen to be involved. In Sandsted, life seems to move at a slower pace – until two murder victims are found. Juncker investigates as far as he can from his small police station.
Gradually, it becomes clear that there is a connection to the terrorist attack. And then suddenly things take a turn for the worse, as secret services and politicians seem to be involved behind the scenes. The case takes on a dimension that seems beyond the police’s control. There are a few partial successes …
Finally, Juncker returns to Copenhagen. His father … has died. Signe investigates without being assigned to the case. She is eventually demoted, even though both of them succeed in shedding more light on the terrorist affair.
Eventually, they are reunited in the same department and officially investigate together. Characteristically, politicians, the police and secret services always play a part in some way, ensuring that everything progresses very slowly and becomes complicated. Copenhagen is a dangerous city – with many victims and perpetrators who will stop at nothing.
